USITT 2025 has officially begun! One of its long-time honored traditions, the First Timers’ Conference Orientation, kicked off the event by introducing newcomers to the heart of USITT—its commissions, mission, and leadership. Among the many speakers was Kasey Allee-Foreman, USITT’s first female president, who shared her journey through the sinuous roads of a career in entertainment and how USITT played a pivotal role in shaping her path. For those just stepping into this world, her words were a reminder that theatre technology and design careers rarely follow a straight line—but that’s exactly what makes them exciting.
A Tradition of Education and Innovation
Since its founding in 1960, USITT has been a cornerstone of theatre and live entertainment technology education. Over the years, it has adapted to the industry’s changing landscape, integrating new technologies, expanding its global reach, and fostering a strong community of professionals.
The conference is structured around commissions—dedicated groups focusing on areas such as scenic design, lighting, sound, and management—ensuring that every discipline within theatre and live entertainment is represented. This year, USITT 2025 will also feature a special panel highlighting Red Escénica Migrante (REM), a network dedicated to supporting Latinx designers in theatre and performance.
Walking in as a First-Time Attendee
I still remember my first USITT conference in 2013—I had no idea where to start. The sheer size of the event, the booths showcasing cutting-edge technology, and the endless panels made it feel like I had stepped into a new world. But by the end of the week, I had found something even more valuable than industry knowledge: friendships, mentors, and opportunities that shaped my career.
That first step into USITT eventually led me to apply for (and win) the Scenic Design Award in 2015, which took me to Germany to represent USITT internationally. Today, I serve on the International Activities Committee, helping to create new opportunities for students and early-career professionals—just like I once was. Through organizations like REM, I’ve carved out ways to give back and support the next generation of theatre artists.
What to Do at USITT 2025
If you’re attending for the first time, here’s my advice:
- Join as many educational sessions as possible. They’re packed with insights from professionals at the top of their game.
- Explore the latest theatre technology. The Stage Expo is a hands-on showcase of innovations shaping the future of live entertainment.
- Network, network, network! Go out of your way to introduce yourself to people—you never know who might become a mentor or future collaborator.
