For Angelica Martins de Oliveira Pereira, art has always been a way of living rather than a career path. Raised among sewing machines, fabrics, and threads in São Paulo, she discovered early on that creation could be both a family language and a form of freedom. From dance and music to sculpture and embroidery, she explored every medium before realizing that costume design was where all her passions converged.
Her work lives at the intersection of movement and imagination, drawing from the poetic world of the circus and the depth of human emotion. Whether designing for children or seniors, she approaches each project as an act of care and storytelling, crafting garments that become part of the performer’s body and spirit.
After years of shaping the Brazilian circus scene through her company Hup, Angelica chose to step beyond its walls to redefine herself as an artist on the world stage. In doing so, she became one of Brazil’s most promising voices in contemporary costume design, celebrating collaboration, ancestry, and artistic resilience. In this edition of PROFILES.
Desde a infância, minha família me incentivou a conhecer o universo da arte. Pratiquei dança, música (bateria), desenho, pintura, poesia, escultura e bordado — mas foi na costura que encontrei um verdadeiro sentimento de pertencimento.
Minha mãe e minha avó materna são costureiras; cresci cercada por máquinas de costura, tecidos e linhas, fascinada por aquele ambiente criativo.
Mais tarde, escolhi estudar Design de Produto, o que ampliou meu entendimento sobre processos criativos. Por essa mesma época, comecei a praticar tecido acrobático e me apaixonei completamente pelo circo contemporâneo.
Essa experiência foi transformadora — fez com que eu percebesse que podia desenvolver minha própria linguagem artística, não apenas no palco, mas também como dramaturga, diretora, preparadora e figurinista.
O figurino sempre foi uma chama constante dentro de mim. Acreditar e investir nesse talento abriu novos caminhos e me conectou ao mundo.
Since childhood, my family encouraged me to explore the arts. I practiced dance, music (drums), drawing, painting, poetry, sculpture, and embroidery — but it was in sewing that I found a true sense of belonging.
My mother and maternal grandmother are seamstresses; I grew up surrounded by sewing machines, fabrics, and threads, fascinated by that creative environment.
Later, I chose to study Product Design, which expanded my understanding of creative processes. Around the same time, I began practicing aerial silks, and completely fell in love with contemporary circus.
That experience was transformative — it made me realize that I could develop my own artistic language, not only on stage but also as a dramaturge, director, coach, and costume designer.
Costume design has always been a steady flame within me. Believing in and investing in that talent has opened new paths and connected me to the world.
Esse trabalho nasceu de forma despretensiosa, durante um momento muito especial da minha vida. Enquanto desenvolvia com meus alunos de circo (de crianças a idosos) um espetáculo que celebrava o processo das aulas — criei uma narrativa para refletir sobre a superexposição digital e seu impacto nas nossas relações, na criatividade e na presença física.
Esse projeto se tornou Circo dos Brinquedos, um espetáculo amador e afetivo que guardei no coração por anos. Depois, revisitei a obra com um novo propósito, apoiada por um edital cultural brasileiro. Reuni uma equipe criativa forte, atualizei o roteiro, redesenhei os figurinos e renomeei o espetáculo como Offline – Dê Asas à Imaginação.
O resultado foi um grande sucesso — o público se conectou profundamente, reviveu memórias de infância e compartilhou comentários emocionados. Esse trabalho fortaleceu minha confiança criativa e marcou o momento em que decidi me dedicar completamente ao figurino e à cenografia.
This work was born unexpectedly, during a very special moment in my life. While developing a performance with my circus students — from children to seniors — I created a narrative to reflect on digital overexposure and its impact on our relationships, creativity, and physical presence.
That project became Circus of Toys, an amateur, heartfelt show that I kept close to my heart for years. Later, I revisited it with renewed purpose, supported by a Brazilian cultural grant. I assembled a strong creative team, updated the script, redesigned the costumes, and renamed the show Offline – Give Wings to Imagination.
The result was a great success — the audience connected deeply, relived childhood memories, and shared emotional feedback. This work strengthened my creative confidence and marked the moment I decided to dedicate myself fully to costume and scenic design.

Quando um projeto tem tempo ou recursos limitados, sigo um processo estruturado, baseado em briefing, brainstorming, mapa mental e métodos de design testados para otimizar o processo criativo. Mas quando estou livre para criar, a inspiração pode vir de qualquer lugar — da natureza, de uma história, de uma personagem ou até do instinto de sobrevivência. Nesses momentos, não sigo um método rígido: vou rapidamente para a experimentação prática, explorando materiais e soluções com o que estiver ao meu redor.
É frequentemente nesse processo espontâneo que acontecem as descobertas mais significativas.
It depends on the context.
When a project has limited time or resources, I follow a structured process based on briefing, brainstorming, mind mapping , and tested design methods to make the most of creativity. But when I’m free to create, inspiration can come from anywhere — nature, a story, a character, or even the instinct to survive. In those moments, I don’t follow a strict method; I move quickly into hands-on experimentation, exploring materials and ideas with whatever is around me.
It’s often in this spontaneous process that the most meaningful discoveries happen.
Meu maior desafio foi me reconhecer como artista.
Em 2016, aos 26 anos, co-fundei a Hup, um negócio familiar e o mais importante centro de pesquisa, difusão e formação circense da cidade de Franca, no interior de São Paulo (Brasil) — um ato de resistência cultural que alcançou mais de 4.000 pessoas.
Por oito anos, a Hup foi meu laboratório vivo: aprendi a produzir, administrar, ensinar, criar e fortalecer conexões humanas. Embora o espaço prosperasse e tivesse um impacto poderoso na comunidade, comecei a me sentir confinada por ele; meus sonhos tinham crescido mais do que as paredes da escola.
Em 2024, tomei a decisão difícil, porém libertadora, de fechar a escola para expandir meus horizontes. Busquei experiências internacionais e vivi um período transformador no México, colaborando com profissionais inspiradores como Sol Kellan, Estela Fagoaga e Laura Marnezti.
Essa escolha restaurou minha autonomia criativa e abriu portas para o reconhecimento do meu trabalho como figurinista.
My greatest challenge was recognizing myself as an artist.
In 2016, at 26, I co-founded Hup, a family-run business and the most significant center for circus research, diffusion, and training in my hometown in São Paulo, Brazil — an act of cultural resistance that reached over 4,000 people.
For eight years, Hup was my living laboratory: I learned how to produce, manage, teach, create, and strengthen human connections. Although the space thrived and had a powerful impact on the community, I began to feel confined by it, my dreams had grown larger than the walls of the school.
In 2024, I made the difficult yet liberating decision to close the school to expand my horizons. I sought international experiences and lived a transformative period in Mexico, collaborating with inspiring professionals such as Sol Kellan, Estela Fagoaga and Laura Marnezti.
That choice restored my creative autonomy and opened doors for the recognition of my work as a costume designer.

Adoro transformar experiências do cotidiano em poesia, observar conexões emocionais, aprender com a sabedoria ancestral e buscar na natureza soluções estéticas.
O universo circense, em todas as suas expressões, continua sendo minha fonte de inspiração mais rica. Estou cercada por pessoas talentosas cujas trajetórias me inspiram constantemente.
E, em uma nota mais poética — se eu tivesse tido a chance de conhecer Dominique Lemieux, a visionária figurinista por trás do Cirque du Soleil, Franco Dragone e Broadway — eu teria dito: “Quero ser como você quando eu crescer.”
I am inspired by humanity.
I love turning everyday experiences into poetry, observing emotional connections, drawing from ancestral wisdom, and looking to nature for aesthetic solutions.
The circus universe, in all its diverse expressions, remains my richest source of inspiration. I’m surrounded by talented people whose journeys constantly inspire me.
And, on a more poetic note — if I had ever had the chance to meet Dominique Lemieux, the visionary costume designer behind Cirque du Soleil, Franco Dragone, and Broadway — I would have said: “I want to be like you when I grow up.”
Depois de anos trabalhando de forma independente, estou vivendo uma nova fase de conexão e colaboração com outros figurinistas, associações — como Grafias da Cena Brasil — e eventos dedicados ao design de cena.
Por meio dessas trocas, passei a entender tanto as forças quanto as vulnerabilidades da nossa área, especialmente no Brasil, e como o pertencimento coletivo fortalece nosso ecossistema criativo. Quando artistas se unem para compartilhar ideias, necessidades e conquistas, nossas vozes ecoam mais longe, moldando uma memória coletiva.
Nesse contexto, tive a honra de representar o Brasil na 6ª edição do World Stage Design, um dos mais importantes eventos globais dedicados ao design para performance, realizado em outubro de 2025 nos Emirados Árabes Unidos.
Ser selecionada entre 100 designers do mundo todo e nomeada a 3ª Melhor Figurinista Emergente foi não apenas um reconhecimento da criatividade e originalidade, mas também um marco histórico para o design cênico brasileiro.
After years of working independently, I am now living a new phase of connection and collaboration with other costume designers, associations — such as Grafias da Cena Brasil — and events dedicated to stage design.
Through these exchanges, I’ve come to understand both the strengths and the vulnerabilities of our field, especially in Brazil, and how collective belonging strengthens our creative ecosystem. When artists unite to share ideas, needs, and achievements, our voices resonate farther, shaping a collective memory.
Within this context, I had the honor of representing Brazil at the 6th edition of World Stage Design, one of the most important global events dedicated to performance design, held in October 2025 in the United Arab Emirates.
Being selected among 100 designers worldwide and named the 3rd Best Emerging Costume Designer was not only recognition of creativity and originality, but also a historic milestone for Brazilian scenic design.

Can I give a set of small pieces of advice?
Avoid comparisons.
Respect your own process.
Learn from everything and everyone — even a child has something to teach.
Honor your mentors and acknowledge your roots.
Respect others’ work and accept that you can’t be good at everything.
Be honest with your own truth.
Do only what is within your reach — neither more nor less.
Value your effort, define your purpose, and move toward it with determination.
And above all: trust and fight for your dreams.
Espero que minhas criações emocionem e inspirem as pessoas.
Meu objetivo é evocar emoções visuais memoráveis, criar experiências imersivas e contar histórias autênticas. Para quem veste meus figurinos, quero potencializar suas habilidades, aprofundar a construção da personagem e oferecer conforto — como se o figurino fosse uma extensão natural do corpo.
Como legado, espero ser lembrada como alguém que colocou amor em cada detalhe, ajudou a transformar vidas por meio da arte, conquistou respeito e viveu plenamente seu sonho.
I hope my creations move and inspire people.
My goal is to evoke memorable visual emotions, create immersive experiences, and tell authentic stories. For those who wear my costumes, I want to enhance their abilities, deepen character embodiment, and provide comfort — as if the costume were a
natural extension of the body.
As a legacy, I hope to be remembered as someone who put love into every detail, helped transform lives through art, earned respect, and lived her dream fully.
