From the moment Alex Reis could hold an instrument, music was not a choice but a constant presence. What began with a toy guitar in early childhood grew into a lifelong commitment to sound, rhythm, and expression that has never loosened its grip. Long before questions of genre or career entered the picture, there was simply the instinct to play, sing, and follow curiosity wherever it led.
Alex’s path reflects a rare combination of discipline and openness. Trained in classical guitar and percussion, yet guided by intuition rather than rigid structure, his practice is shaped by trust in flow and respect for creative energy as it appears. Whether recording, performing, or stepping into unfamiliar territory, his work resists predictability in favor of presence. For him, challenges are not obstacles, but invitations. Moments that sharpen focus and reignite purpose.
Across decades of professional work and global stages, Alex seeks transformation rather than comfort. There is a restlessness in that pursuit, but also generosity, and a belief that art exists to move people, provoke reflection, and remind us of our shared humanity.
In this edition of PROFILES, Alex reflects on intuition, creative risk, and why making art remains both a responsibility and a gift.
Meus pais dizem que, aos 2 anos de idade, eu preferia um violão de brinquedo a uma bola de futebol.
Lembro que não largava esse brinquedo por nada. Cantava o dia inteiro e, aos 6 anos, iniciei meus estudos formais em música. Estudei violão clássico e me formei no curso de bateria e percussão no conservatório. Mas também continuei cantando. Reconheço que fui muito precoce para o mundo profissional, recebendo meu primeiro pagamento quando tinha exatamente 11 anos de idade. Depois disso, nunca mais parei, e a música se tornou minha profissão até hoje.
My parents say that at age 2, I preferred a toy guitar to a soccer ball.
I remember not letting go of this toy for anything. I sang all day long, and at age 6 I began my formal music studies. I studied classical guitar and graduated from the drum and percussion course at the conservatory. But I also continued singing. I recognize that I was very precocious for the professional world, receiving my first payment when I was exactly 11 years old. After that, I never stopped, and music has become my profession to this day.
Depois de trabalhar por décadas com artistas de renome internacional no Brasil e gravar inúmeros trabalhos de diversos estilos musicais para outras pessoas, principalmente como músico contratado, decidi, em 1998, gravar meu primeiro CD solo de Jazz Brasileiro. Naquela época, convidei amigos próximos e convidados especiais, incluindo alguns do exterior. Em 2000, lancei meu primeiro trabalho solo chamado Aroeira (que é o nome de uma árvore brasileira muito poderosa). Esse trabalho foi um ponto de virada na minha carreira até então. Após seu lançamento, gravei outros trabalhos solo, entre outros projetos, mas foi esse que abriu portas para mim.
After working for decades with internationally renowned artists in Brazil, and recording numerous works of various musical styles for other people, mostly as a hired sideman, I decided in 1998 to record my first solo CD of Brazilian Jazz. At that time, I invited close friends and special guests, including some from abroad. In 2000, I released my first solo work called Aroeira (which is the name of a very powerful Brazilian tree). This work was a turning point in my career up to that point. After its release, I recorded other solo works, etc… but it was this one that opened doors for me.
Meu processo criativo geralmente surge de forma muito espontânea.
Existem fases e fases, mas posso dizer que as inspirações surgem de muitas maneiras diferentes e em muitos contextos distintos.
Procuro não seguir padrões ou regras.
Deixo fluir naturalmente, sem interromper o processo.
Sem interferir julgando ou racionalizando demais.
Acredito que existe uma energia criativa fluida que deve ser nutrida justamente permitindo que ela flua à medida que surge.
Depois que algo se torna mais concreto, então começo, com muito respeito, a analisá-lo.
My creative process usually arises very spontaneously.
There are phases and phases, but I can say that inspirations arise in many different ways and in many different contexts.
I try not to follow patterns or rules.
I let it flow naturally without interrupting the process.
Without interfering by judging or overthinking.
I believe there is a fluid creative energy that should be nurtured precisely by letting it flow as it arises.
After something more concrete, then I will very respectfully begin to analyze it.
Conseguir viver de forma digna da minha arte.
Foi exatamente isso que me fez sentir desafiado e motivado a seguir em frente e acreditar no sucesso.
Sinto-me muito motivado quando tenho a necessidade de provar primeiro para mim mesmo que sou capaz de executar novos projetos e enfrentar novos desafios.
To be able to make a decent living from my art.
That’s exactly why I felt challenged and motivated to move forward and believe in success.
I feel very motivated when I have the need to prove to myself first that I can execute new projects and new challenges.
Como já disse antes, o que mais me inspira são os desafios.
Forjar novos caminhos, realizar trabalhos que nunca fiz antes. Por exemplo, depois de quase três décadas atuando profissionalmente, em 2010, quando eu tinha 38 anos, fui contratado pelo Cirque du Soleil. Estive em turnê mundial com a companhia há 15 anos, trabalhando em mais de 30 países e 5 continentes. Esse é o tipo de desafio que me motiva. E agora, o que me motiva neste momento é o fato de eu não estar mais naquele contexto que mencionei, e estar pronto para novos desafios na minha carreira. Por exemplo, atualmente estou envolvido em um novo projeto que concebi e produzi, que é uma banda de Rock’n’Roll puro chamada, em português, O Bando de Billy Dinamite, ou, em inglês, The Billy Dinamite’s Gang. Isso tem me motivado muito e me feito sentir extremamente realizado com o que estou criando.
As I said before, what inspires me most are challenges.
Forging new paths, doing work I’ve never done before, for example, after almost 3 decades working professionally, in 2010 when I was 38 years old I was hired by Cirque du Soleil. I’ve been on a world tour with the company for the last 15 years, working in more than 30 countries and 5 continents. That’s the kind of challenge that motivates me. And now what motivates me at this moment is the fact that I’m not in that context I mentioned, and ready for new challenges in my career. For example, right now I’m engaged in a new project that I conceived and produced, which is a pure Rock’n’Roll band called in Portuguese O Bando De Billy Dinamite, or in English The Billy Dinamite’s Gang, and it’s motivating me a lot and making me feel very fulfilled by what I’m creating.
Na minha opinião, o fator mais estimulante na minha área atualmente é justamente o fato de estarmos vivendo um momento no mundo em que ninguém sabe o que vai acontecer nos próximos anos.
O mercado musical passou por muitas fases diferentes. Antes, era previsível, depois quase previsível, e agora é absolutamente imprevisível.
O mundo está se movendo em um ritmo muito acelerado, as pessoas também, e o mercado é uma verdadeira caixa de surpresas.
Acredito que o advento da inteligência artificial, depois desse período inicial de novidade e encantamento, levará gradualmente as pessoas a consumir mais arte feita por seres humanos. Sou otimista, mas também realista.
As possibilidades para aqueles que são competentes no que fazem são incontáveis.
In my opinion, the most motivating factor in my field right now is precisely because we are living in a time in the world where nobody knows what will happen in the coming years.
The music market has gone through so many different phases, but before it was predictable, then almost predictable, and now it is absolutely unpredictable.
The world is moving at such a fast pace, people too, and the market is a box of surprises.
I think that the advent of AI after this period of novelty and nuptials with it will gradually lead people to consume more art made by humans. I am optimistic but also realistic.

Be responsible for what you want to communicate.
Have humility and respect for all the artists who came before, and then help those who are coming. Never underestimate any beginner, because one day he or she may be a giant.
