Rebeca Garro’s work begins with an insistence that theatre must matter. Not as decoration, not as escape, but as a space where reality is confronted and made visible. From the outset of her career, her artistic choices have been guided by an ethical urgency and a deep awareness of who is missing from the stage and why.
As an artistic director working between creation and cultural strategy, Garro operates at the intersection of aesthetics and responsibility. Her projects do not shy away from discomfort. Instead, they invite audiences to sit with difficult questions and recognize themselves within stories shaped by class, gender, and social inequality. There is precision in her curatorial eye and intention in every collaboration she builds, always in service of amplifying voices that are too often pushed to the margins.
In this edition of NEW TALENTS, we turn our attention to an artist whose practice understands theatre as both refuge and catalyst, expanding beyond borders while remaining grounded in truth.
Mi trayectoria comenzó en 2014 con la creación de mi grupo de teatro: El Estuche Producciones, impulsada por la necesidad de transformar el escenario en un espacio de denuncia y visibilización para grupos vulnerables de mi país. El punto de partida fue la puesta en escena de El Color de nuestra Piel, del dramaturgo Mexicano Celestino Gorostiza. Con este proyecto decidí que mi labor como directora artística debía trascender el entretenimiento para abordar temas críticos como el clasismo, la discriminación y la violencia de género.
A lo largo de 11 años que lleva de trayectoria nuestra agrupación, esa “chispa” inicial ha evolucionado desde un deseo de expresión personal hacia una responsabilidad social. Lo que comenzó como un proyecto local, se ha transformado en una plataforma con impacto internacional, llevando nuestra voz a festivales de teatro en Costa rica, Bolivia y Colombia.
Mi evolución como Directora se refleja en la capacidad de conectar con comunidades diversas, orquestando narrativas que sensibilizan al espectador. Hoy, mi motor es la convicción de que el teatro es una herramienta de cambio capaz de cruzar fronteras, manteniendo intacta la pasión por dar voz a quienes más lo necesitan.
My journey began in 2014 with the creation of my theatre company, El Estuche Producciones, driven by the need to transform the stage into a space for denunciation and visibility for vulnerable groups in my country. The starting point was our staging of El Color de nuestra Piel by Mexican playwright Celestino Gorostiza. With this project, I decided that my work as an artistic director had to go beyond entertainment in order to address critical issues such as classism, discrimination, and gender based violence.
Over the eleven years of our company’s trajectory, that initial “spark” has evolved from a desire for personal expression into a sense of social responsibility. What began as a local project has transformed into a platform with international impact, carrying our voice to theatre festivals in Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Colombia.
My evolution as a director is reflected in my ability to connect with diverse communities, orchestrating narratives that sensitize the audience. Today, my driving force is the conviction that theatre is a tool for change, capable of crossing borders, while maintaining an intact passion for giving voice to those who need it most.
Compartir la historia detrás de nuestra versión de Los Perros, de Elena Garro, es hablar de uno de mis mayores retos y orgullos como Directora Artística de El Estuche Producciones, mi labor fue conceptualizar este proyecto desde su raíz: seleccioné cuidadosamente el texto, convoqué a la dirección de escena idónea y elegí a cada integrante del elenco para asegurar que la visión estética y el mensaje social fueran implacables.
Para mí, esta obra representa la culminación de un proceso de curaduría exitoso. Ha sido el proyecto que nos ha permitido internacionalizarnos, confirmando que una dirección artística sólida puede universalizar una historia local.
Los perros es la prueba de que, cuando se logra amalgamar el talento adecuado bajo una visión clara, el teatro se convierte en una herramienta de transformación poderosa. Ver cómo esta producción no solo resuena en mi propio país sino también en el extranjero, es el mayor testimonio de que nuestra apuesta por la calidad y el compromiso social ha valido la pena.
Sharing the story behind our version of Los Perros by Elena Garro means speaking about one of my greatest challenges and proudest achievements as Artistic Director of El Estuche Producciones. My role was to conceptualize this project from its very root. I carefully selected the text, brought together the ideal stage direction, and chose each member of the cast to ensure that the aesthetic vision and the social message were uncompromising.
For me, this work represents the culmination of a successful curatorial process. It has been the project that allowed us to internationalize our work, confirming that a solid artistic direction can universalize a local story.
Los Perros is proof that when the right talent is brought together under a clear vision, theatre becomes a powerful tool for transformation. Seeing how this production resonates not only in my own country but also abroad is the strongest testimony that our commitment to quality and social responsibility has been worthwhile.
Mi mayor desafío ha sido la autogestión de proyectos de alto impacto social en un entorno donde los recursos para la cultura suelen ser limitados. Como Directora Artística, el reto no solo ha sido crear belleza , sino sostener un grupo de teatro independiente y lograr que temas tan crudos como la violencia de género y la discriminación encuentren un espacio en la cartelera nacional e internacional.
Ha habido momentos de incertidumbre, pero esos obstáculos fueron los que moldearon mi crecimiento, me han obligado a evolucionar de ser una creadora a una estratega cultural. Desarrollé la capacidad de negociar, de tejer redes de colaboración internacional y de entender que cada negativa es una oportunidad para fortalecer nuestras propuestas.
Hoy, mi crecimiento se refleja en una dirección más madura, resiliente y, sobre todo, consiente de que la gestión es el vinculo que permite que el mensaje artístico llegue a donde más se necesita.
My greatest challenge has been the self management of projects with high social impact in an environment where resources for culture are often limited. As an Artistic Director, the challenge has not only been to create beauty, but to sustain an independent theatre company and ensure that themes as raw as gender based violence and discrimination find a place on national and international stages.
There have been moments of uncertainty, but those obstacles shaped my growth. They forced me to evolve from being solely a creator into becoming a cultural strategist. I developed the ability to negotiate, to weave international collaboration networks, and to understand that every rejection is an opportunity to strengthen our proposals.
Today, my growth is reflected in a more mature and resilient direction, and above all, one that is conscious of the fact that management is the link that allows the artistic message to reach where it is most needed.
La realidad social de las mujeres en América Latina y la literatura de autoras que, como Elena Garro , supieron retratar esa complejidad con una sensibilidad única, es de los aspectos que más me inspiran. También, la capacidad de resiliencia de nuestros grupos vulnerables; darles voz a sus historias es el motor que impulsa cada proyecto de El Estuche Producciones.
Así pues, mi compromiso ético con la verdad y la justicia son mi mayor inspiración. No busco la perfección estética, sino una honestidad escénica que logre que el espectador se reconozca en el “otro”. En mi Dirección Artística, esto se traduce en la selección de elencos diversos, en atmósferas que evoquen lo cotidiano y lo simbólico y en una elección de textos que incomodan para transformar.
En esencia, un tributo a esas voces que históricamente han sido silenciadas dándoles un lugar digno y poderoso sobre el escenario.
The social reality of women in Latin America and the literature of authors who, like Elena Garro, were able to portray that complexity with a unique sensitivity are among my greatest inspirations. I am also inspired by the resilience of vulnerable communities. Giving voice to their stories is the engine that drives every project at El Estuche Producciones.
My ethical commitment to truth and justice is my greatest source of inspiration. I do not seek aesthetic perfection, but rather scenic honesty that allows the spectator to recognize themselves in the “other.” In my artistic direction, this translates into the selection of diverse casts, atmospheres that evoke both the everyday and the symbolic, and the choice of texts that unsettle in order to transform.
At its core, my work is a tribute to those voices that have historically been silenced, giving them a dignified and powerful place onstage.
Mi objetivo como Directora Artística es que el espectador, al salir de la sala, se lleve consigo una pregunta o una emoción que antes no estaba allí. Aspiro a que las puestas en escena de mi grupo El Estuche Producciones, sirvan para humanizar las cifras y la problemáticas sociales, transformando la indiferencia en empatía.
Me interesa que nuestro teatro sea un detonante del dialogo en la mesa de las familias, en los salones de clases, en las empresas e instituciones; que el impacto trascienda el aplauso y se convierta en una conciencia colectiva sobre temas como la equidad y la justicia.
Al final, espero haber contribuido a demostrar que el arte y el teatro son refugio, pero también una herramienta de cambio capaz de sanar y fortalecer el tejido social.
My goal as an Artistic Director is for the audience to leave the theatre carrying a question or an emotion that was not there before. I aspire for the productions of my company, El Estuche Producciones, to humanize statistics and social issues, transforming indifference into empathy.
I want our theatre to spark dialogue at family tables, in classrooms, in companies and institutions, so that the impact transcends applause and becomes a collective awareness around issues such as equity and justice.
Ultimately, I hope to have contributed to demonstrating that art and theatre are a refuge, but also a tool for change capable of healing and strengthening the social fabric.
