Every scenic designer needs a way to translate ideas into space. SketchUp offers theatre students an accessible introduction to building and exploring set designs in three dimensions.
In this workshop, you will learn to navigate the SketchUp interface and use essential drawing and modeling tools to create a simple theatrical environment. Through guided exercises, you will work with lines, shapes, dimensions, groups, and basic materials while building your first 3D set model.
No previous experience with SketchUp or 3D modeling is required. The goal is not to produce a finished design, but to develop the confidence and foundational skills needed to continue working within the SketchUp ecosystem.

Josafath Reynoso is a scenic designer whose work spans off-Broadway, regional, and international stages, from the sun-bleached coastlines of Much Ado About Nothing at American Players Theatre to the swimming-pool memory landscape of The Ripple, the Wave that Carried Me Home at Kansas City Repertory Theatre. His design concept for Richard Strauss’s Salomé won the Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Prize from OPERA America, and his work has earned the Gold Medal for Scenic Design at World Stage Design and a feature in The New York Times. An Assistant Professor of Scenic Design at the University of Texas at Austin, he is also the founder and editor of Skene, an international digital publication for live performance that has reached readers in 95 countries. His practice moves fluidly between the drafting table and the page, treating design, publishing, and mentorship as a single, continuous act of research.
No previous experience with SketchUp or other 3D modeling software is required. Participants should be comfortable using a computer, opening files, and working with a mouse or trackpad. Access to SketchUp during the workshop is recommended.
